“If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is – infinite.” William Blake
In conversation with a colleague yesterday the concept of “having gaps” came up and how to address them. Often we hear of shortcomings, we hear of having a lack of experience / training / competence to do a particular task / job. However what my colleague and I talked over yesterday were simply gaps, with no judgement, simply an acknowledgement of a training need or a need to leverage talent differently. In my view, a gap is simply an opportunity to improve; continuous improvement even of oneself. No one is perfect, after all, we are all on a journey of infinite possibility. We simply need to choose our route. How we choose will determine which gaps remain and which gaps become filled. Idealistic? Possibly. A better way to view the world and myself? Definitely.
Let me explain. When we are born, we are like the seed of an tree. For arguments sake, lets call it an apple tree. Our genetics will pull us one way, life and our choices will pull us another forcing us to grow up and change. Each choice we make results in a branch, will the branch go left or right is up to us. Will the branch bear fruit (success)? Again, it is up to us. A gap then, is a branch not grown; a choice not taken. It can be difficult to go back and grow a branch once we’ve born fruit on other branches or if we’ve made a succession of choice in one direction that has become a tangle of different branches, but it is possible. We simply need to make another choice and start learning! So open your eyes; open the doors of perception to the infinite possibilities!
